Dress

1971
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A short dress or minidress made from a brushed cotton printed with a green and pale lilac trailing branch design on a dark purple or plum ground. Made with a bodice fastening with nine covered buttons, a high round neckline with a stand collar which extends into broad 'pussy bow' neck ties. The dress has very generous overhanging sleeves, slightly puffed at the shoulder, a tight fit to the upper arm achieved with curved seams, with wide lower sleeves gathered into deep three-buttoned cuffs at the wrists. The bodice is made from four panels, cut with very short shoulder seams and seamed at the dropped waist to a softly pleated skirt. There is a short zip at the proper left hand side seam. The bust is shaped with distinctive Biba 'L' shaped darts, one at each side seam. Small single darts shape the back panels to fit the shoulders beneath the stand collar either side of the centre-back zip.

Materials and techniques
The textile is probably roller-printed, possibly in Manchester at the Burgess Ledward factory. The dress is machine-stitched and probably made by a London manufacturer such as Theo Savva.
