This poster reproduces a portrait of Vladimir Ilich Lenin (1870-1924), founder of the Russian Communist Party and one of the fathers of Marxism-Leninism. Prints with the portrait of Lenin, along with those of Marx, Engels and Stalin, became very popular after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, when the Chinese Communist Party embraced Marxism-Leninism as its guiding ideology.
The four portraits were hung in Tian'anmen Square on important national celebrations: those of Marx and Engels were on the side of the Museum of Chinese Revolution, and those of Lenin and Stalin on the opposite side. This print was produced in May 1969, at the time of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).
