Place of origin |
This poster reproduces a portrait of Joseph Stalin (1878-1953), General Secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death. Prints with the portrait of Stalin, along with those of Marx, Lenin, Engels, became very popular after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, when the Chinese Communist Party embraced Marxism-Leninism as its guiding ideology.
The four portraits were hung in Tian'anmen Square on important national celebrations: those of Marx and Engels were on the side of the Museum of Chinese Revolution, and those of Lenin and Stalin on the opposite side. This print was produced in Shanghai in August 1969, at the time of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).
