an Angel carrying a candlestick

Statuette
last quarter 15th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Although it has been associated with Verrocchio, the figure relates more closely to the work of Benedetto da Majano (for instance the candle - bearing angels on the Altar of Santa Fina in the Collegiata at San Gimignano), and was perhaps made in the Majano workshop. There are holes in the back for the insertion of wings, in the head for a halo, and in the top for a candlestick for a metal pricket. Presumably the figure was originally painted, although drastic stripping has left no trace of colour or priming.
