Silk handkerchiefs were major export items from India (especially Bengal) to Europe in the 18th and 19th century. This handkerchief was printed in Britain, probably in Manchester or Glasgow, using the new discharge technique to produce white spots on a dark ground. The design is in direct imitation of the Bengal tie-dyed silk bandannas (from the Hindi 'bandhna', to tie).
