Place of origin |
Aluminium was discovered as an isolated metal in the 1820's. The process of extracting it from various ores was highly complex and thus pure aluminium was at the time more expensive than gold. Bars of aluminium were exhibited alongside the French Crown Jewels at the L'Exposition Universelle, in Paris, in 1855.
Later aluminium became a cheap material for costume jewellery. Its clean, modern appearance was also exploited by modernist jewellers. Since the 1960's aluminium has regained importance in contemporary jewellery.
