Materials and techniques | Soft-paste porcelain, painted in enamels and gilt |
Brief description | Cup and saucer, soft-paste porcelain, painted in enamels and gilt, made by William Duesbury & Co., English (Chelsea-Derby), 1770-1781 |
Physical description | Cup and saucer of soft-paste porcelain, painted in green and black and decorated with gilding. Both pieces have reeded bodies with scalloped gilt edge and a border of floral festoons. |
Style | |
Marks and inscriptions | Conjoined anchor and 'D' (Maker's mark painted (overglaze) in gold on underside of both pieces (the mark on the saucer, however, is in a different colour gold from the cup and is a fake)) |
Credit line | Transferred from the Museum of Practical Geology, Jermyn Street |
Production | The cup and saucer did not originally belong to one another, and the saucer could have been made as a replacement piece. The saucer can be dated to 1778-1780/81 by the incised N mark, but the cup has a factory mark in use between 1770 and 1777. The anchor and D mark on the saucer is a fake. |
