Production
According to the Register this was part of a service made for the Duchess of Devonshire as a wedding present to Mary Babington, who married the Rev. Thomas Gisburne, of Derby, in 1784. The factory mark, however, is datable to 1770/1772 to 1777.
Shown at the Derby Exhibition in 1870. Another cup and saucer from this set is in the British Museum, see Hobson Catalogue p63. Compare also the note on Sch.I 386.
