ca.1920 (photographed)
The sitter Lady Dorothy Milner Gathorne-Hardy (1889-1977) was the third and youngest daughter of the 2nd Earl of Cranbrook and the wife of Rupert D'Oyly Carte (1876-1948), whom she married in 1907. They had two children, Bridget (1908-1985) and Michael (1911-1932).
In 1925 Carte built Coleton Fishacre, a house in Kingswear, Devon, where Lady Dorothy spent most of her time. Michael's death in 1932 in a car accident in Switzerland caused a rift between them from which the marriage never recovered. Dorothy moved to Tobago where she married St Yves de Verteuil, and spent the rest of her life, fully committed to the community there.

Object history | This photograph was inherited by Peter Parker, who bequeathed it to the museum, from his father Stanley Parker who was employed by the Savoy Hotel as a junior clerk in May 1909, straight from school. From that job, on the death of Helen D'Oyly Carte in 1913, Stanley Parker was appointed by Rupert D'Oyly Carte to understudy Mr George A Richardson who managed the theatre from November 1911 to February 1915. In 1913 Stanley Parker became Rupert and (later) Bridget D'Oyly Carte's private secretary, and secretary of the Savoy Theatre Ltd., and the Opera Company. He worked for the company until his death in 1960. |
