Historical context
Exploding Kittens was developed by Elan Lee and Matthew Inman following the most successful Kickstarter campaign in the history of the crowdfunding platform. Lee and Inman initially sought to raise $10,000 but received donations of $8.7 million from 219,000 donors in just 30 days. Exploding Kittens Inc. was formed in 2015 and has sold 11 million copies of this game and others (as of 2022).

Before Exploding Kittens, Lee had a varied career, beginning as a character designer for special effects company Industrial Light and Magic. He then became a lead game designer for Microsoft Studios, working on titles for both PC and Xbox. He specialised in Alternate Reality games, including The Beast, which was used to promote Steven Spielberg’s 2001 film A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

Inman created The Oatmeal, a popular webcomic and humour website, in 2009. His comics cover a diverse range of topics, including babies that taste like nachos, zombies, and horse care. His distinctive illustration style has received many plaudits, including the 2014 Eisner Award for best webcomic. Inman has also worked a creative consultant on the animated film The Secret Life of Pets 2.
