Place of origin |
This jabot was part of a stage costume worn by Bay Harrington (1891- 1983).
Florence Charlotte Harrington was always known as Bay, a corruption of 'Baby', a family nickname. She trained at the Tree Academy as an opera singer and appeared in performances at Covent Garden and at Her Majesty's Theatre. Although she had the opportunity of continuing her singing studies at La Scala, her family felt she was too young and, after a bout of TB affected her voice, she abandoned grand opera for the variety stage, appearing with concert groups, including The Seven Romps in 1912 and then in various double acts with other female performers. She toured with Eileen Lawlor as The Trilbies in 1913, and later worked with Evelyn Kirkby as Kirkby & Harrington. As well as variety, Bay Harrington appeared in pantomime in London and the UK, playing the Principal Boy roles.
The jabot is inscribed on the neckband 'J. Dobson Rosen, Major Domo Faninal', so at some stage it has been worn by a tenor in a production of Der Rosenkavalier.
