Adeline Genée (1878-1970) was adopted by her ballet-master, her uncle Alexander, so that he could train her for the stage. He ran his own company, performing in Baltic countries. While in Stettin, Germany (now Szczecin, Poland), for several years Genée learnt her craft, helping in wardrobe as well as performing in the corps de ballet and taking some solo roles.
Genée's career took her to Berlin and Munich, before reigning as ballerina at the Empire Theatre in London's Leicester Square between 1897-1909. Towards the end of her career she toured to the USA and Australia and she established her own company which appeared at the London Coliseum.
