Windsor Castle, from the Sandpit Gate

Watercolour
1820-1859 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

As a technician, Cox is unparalleled in his deployment of short brushstrokes, breaking down the surface of the paper to create the shimmering, ever-changing effects of nature. He leaves some of the paper showing; he scratches out paint, and mops up paint with a leather blotter. All this serves to excite our visual nerves in a manner quite different from that of most of his contemporaries.
