Sophia Fedorova

Photograph
early 20th century (photographed)
Place of origin

Sophia (Sofia) Fedorova (1879-1963) was trained at and graduated into the Bolshoi in 1899 as Fedorova II. She was a great dancer-actress described by Fyodor Lopuhkov as 'the omnipotence of talent...Squat, plain, seemingly utterly unsuitable to the stage, she knew the secret of transforming herself through dancing in moments of tremendous tension. In the grip of an emotional outburst her body generated an inexplicable trembling; her face radiated an inner light; in a state of ecstasy she simply dazzled.' Although she danced briefly in the West with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and with Anna Pavlova's Company, her career was cut short by a series of breakdowns.
