Jumper

2012 (designed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Laduma Ngxokolo founded South African knitwear brand MAXHOSA AFRICA in 2012. Ngxokolo became interested in fashion design as a teenager when his mother, also a designer, bought a knitting machine for the home. Ngxokolo remarks this move ‘changed my direction in life forever’.
MAXHOSA AFRICA has a strong visual identity, known for its bold and colourful geometric knits, whose patterns reference Xhosa beadwork.

Ngxokolo’s first collection, produced for Spring/Summer 2012, grew out on his final university project. He explored making knitwear that would be suitable for amakrwala, initiates from the Xhosa people of the Nguni, a cultural group primarily from southern Africa of which Ngxokolo is part. Ngxokolo was inspired by Xhosa beadwork patterns, symbols and colours, and translated these into knitwear patterns. These design references are repeated across all his subsequent collections. This jumper is from this first collection and is an excellent early example of Ngxokolo’s now signature patterns.
