Object history
Registered File number 1993/1501, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Rockabilly: UK early 1980s' (includes the trousers T.485-1993, the jacket T.552-1993 and the shirt T.955-1994).

This ensemble represented the male Rockabilly look of the early 1980s for the Streetstyle exhibition. It was worn by Jay Strongman, who, with Bob Crossley owned a Rockabilly shop in Kensington Market called "Rock-A-Cha" which opened in 1979 and rapidly gained popularity amongst rockabilly followers.

By the early 1980s many Rockabillies had adopted a smart, somewhat flamboyant style drawing inspiration from American casual wear. Original garments such as the vintage jacket here were highly desirable. The trousers, which came from Rock-A-Cha, were based on those worn by the rock star Eddy Cochrane.
