Place of origin

The New York Times a world-renowned newspaper on the 24th of May 2020 commemorated the loss of 100,000 US citizens due to the impact of Coronavirus Pandemic. The names of the deceased were listed, with their ages and a line from their obituaries, in a place to return their humanity to them, rather than them becoming a statistic. This was the first publication in roughly 50 years that ran without an image on the cover and the simpleness of the design highlights the depth of meaning and the magnitude of the loss.
The Coronavirus Pandemic which began in 2019, shocked health organisations globally. The high transmission rates and quick deterioration in health for many infected, put a strain on resources and with health professionals and governmental officials unsure with how to respond, mis-information was quickly spread leading to an increased number of cases and then subsequent deaths.
The role of the Newspaper is to provide knowledge to those in need and to convey complex information in an accessible format. This publication of the New York Times converts complex data into an understandable mode of media which displays the relevant information at the forefront of design.
