Cylindrical with loop handle mounted in pewter and iron. Painted with a man in a blue coat, orange-yellow breeches and light olive-green hat with yellow feathers, spearing a wild boar, also attacked by a dog, both painted in manganese purple, in a landscape with trees in olive-green, yellow and blue, growing on blue, yellow and purple hillocks. Pewter footring and cover with knob and inscription.

Brief description
Tankard of reddish earthenware covered with a tin glaze, painted in colours and mounted with a pewter lid. Probably made at the factory of Johann Gottlieb Menicus. German (Berlin), about 1740.
Physical description
Cylindrical with loop handle mounted in pewter and iron. Painted with a man in a blue coat, orange-yellow breeches and light olive-green hat with yellow feathers, spearing a wild boar, also attacked by a dog, both painted in manganese purple, in a landscape with trees in olive-green, yellow and blue, growing on blue, yellow and purple hillocks. Pewter footring and cover with knob and inscription.

Originally described as 'German (Gmunden), first half of 18th century'. Subsequently attributed to Frankfurt-on-the-Oder and second half of 18th century.
Historical context
Note in Register: Possibly Crailsham, made for export to Thuringia (Dr. Arno Schönberger, Dec.1954).
Note in Register: Suggestion made by Dr. Konrad Strauss [...?...] that the 'M' mark stands for Menicus of Berlin. July 1966.
