St. John the Baptist

Statuette
second half of the 15th century (carved)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This figure has received a tentative ascription to Agnolo di Polo (b. 1470; d. after 1498), a pupil of Verrocchio, who is known to have worked mainly in terracotta. It is difficult to classify though and does not bear any direct relationship to the workshop of Verrocchio. It is apparently cast, rather than modelled, and traces of colour at the back indicate that it was originally painted.
