The press photograph shows Tamara Karsavina coaching Margot Fonteyn as the Firebird. Karsavina had created the role for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1910. In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the death of Serge Diaghilev, the Sadler's Wells [Royal] Ballet danced the ballet for the first time with Fonteyn in the title role at the Edinburgh Festival on 23 August 1954. This photograph was taken at the dress rehearsal at Covent Garden.
