Harlequinade

Costume Design
1950s (drawn)

This version of the costume for the ballerina in the Harlequinade pas de deux appears to have been designed in the mid-1950s.

Harlequinade was in the repertory of London’s Festival Ballet in various arrangements through the 1950s, first as a one-act ballet after Marius Petipa, subsequently as just a pas de deux. It is uncertain when the yellow and black costumes were introduced but it may well have been when it was televised by ITV on "Chelsea at Nine", 10 December 1957, danced by Diane Richards and John Gilpin. The pas de deux was a part of the touring repertoire of Belinda Wright and Jelko Yuresha during the 1960s.

As shown in the design, the ballerina’s tutu skirt was initially black, and the dancer wore flowers in her hair. From the early 1960s a small tricorne hat was added along with a small jewelled choker, and the skirt became yellow.
