Founded by Moses Turahirwa in 2015, Moshions is a Rwandan fashion house known for re-imagining traditional Rwandan forms and cultural motifs into contemporary pieces. On the origins of the brand Turahirwa remarks, ‘In conceiving Moshions I wanted to pay homage to the incredible cultural aesthetics found in Rwanda and all across the African continent: meticulous craftsmanship, detail and design ken go into all these rich visual statements.’ Turahirwa’s collections often pay tribute to the ceremonial attire worn historically by Rwandan royalty, in particular the Umushanana - an ensemble comprising the Umukenyero, a wrap skirt, and the Umwitero, a sash draped over the shoulder.
The Intsinzi ensemble, a tunic top and trousers, demonstrates the influence of the Umwitero on many of Turahirwa’s designs. The outer robe was introduced into Rwandan fashion in the 1920s and was primarily worn by the royal family and chiefs of the Ubwami kingdom. In the Intsinzi ensemble, Turahirwa references a pared back version of the Umwitero with the pleated detachable swag on the tunic top which elegantly drapes over the shoulder. The Umwitero swag is attached at the left shoulder with a black and white beaded clasp and press studs secure it to the right shoulder.
