Brief description
Jar and cover of buff earthenware painted in blue, green and brown over a white slip under a clear glaze. Hungarian, probably Sárospatak, about 1900 to 1920.

Globular body with flanged mouth, having on the shoulders two loop handles with foliate terminations. Slightly domed cover with flattened knob. Painted with sprays of stylised foliage and blue flowers with brown centres.

Historical context
A similar jar and cover (cover top differs) is illustrated in Román (see Refs.) where it is described as a christening jar, made in Sárospatak by Mrs. Bertalan Szkircsák in 1939.
