Akosua Afriye-Kumi founded sustainable bag brand AAKS in 2014. AAKS is best known for its handwoven raffia bags, made by female artisans in Bolgatanga, northern Ghana, using local handweaving techniques. AAKS focuses on local, ethical production with the goal of setting up sustainable employment streams for women.
The Baw Pot bag is one of AAKS’s signature designs, originally released in 2014. This colourway, with a light pink dyed top and navy base, was released for Season 6 in 2021. The shape and colour take inspiration from the earthenware clay pots used for cooking in the open air in many Ghanaian homes. The body of the bag is made from raffia. It typically takes 4-5 days to create the bag, including sourcing, dyeing and weaving the raffia.
