Two-part costume designed by Fotini Dimou for Vidya Patel as the Princess for An Italian in Madrid, choreographed by Richard Alston, 2016. The costume was made by Hilary Wili of Clapham.
An Italian in Madrid was a narrative work, choreographed by Richard Alston to a selection of the Keyboard Sonatas written by Domenico Scarlatti for the young Princess Maria Barbara who left Italy for Spain when she was betrothed to a Spanish Prince. Alston invited the young kathak dance, Vidya Patel, to guest with his company and play the Princess to introduce a fusion of cultural styles.
An Italian in Madrid was commissioned by Sadler’s Wells with support from The Point, Eastleigh. It was premiered at Sadler’s Wells on 29 March 2016, having been previewed at The Point and toured Britain for over a year. There is further information on the making and caring for the costumes in the V&A's Richard Alston Dance Company archive (THM/627).
