Drug Jar

1530-1550 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This jar, bearing an unidentified coat of arms, was probably part of a large pharmacy series. It was meant to store electuary of plums, a widely used purgative. The beginning of the production of drug jars inscribed with the name of the contents dates from about the middle of the 15th century, both in Spain and in Italy.
The horizontal and vertical blue outlines painted on the body helped the painter to set out the design.
