Object history
Bought from Mr. Charles Fairfax Murray, London, for 5s.
At time of acquisition, it was believed to be Italian, about 1500. Subsequently attributed to Padua and the the second half of the 15th century. More recently, North Italian about 1500.
Historical context
The shield in the centre of the bowl is charged with what looks to be a long sword with an elaborate hilt (a rapier). It is not known if this is an actual armorial device or a conventional form of decoration.
