ca. 1960 (made)
ca. 1960 (made)
This poster would have been printed for the entire touring season of the circus, with the yellow ground below the image left blank for overprinting the venue and date of the circus's appearance. This poster is undated, but Robert Fossett and George Sanger's Combined Circus started in 1957, and the decorated graphics of the word 'circus' is typical of the 1960s.
The central image depicts some of the typical acts of a 1960s circus including a trapeze act performed by a man and a woman, an elephant act with three elephants, a liberty horse act, a llama, two chimpanzees and a clown with a bucket of water about to perform a so-called 'slosh' act, the comedy act in which clowns get wet but the sawdust of the ring is protected by sheeting.
