Harpo Marx

Theatre Costume
1979 (designed)
Place of origin

Sheila Steafel received rave reviews for her portrayal of Harpo Marx in the musical comedy A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine at the Mayfair Theatre in 1979. Act I - A Day In Hollywood - was a revue of classic Hollywood songs, while Act II - A Night in the Ukraine - reimagined Anton Chekhov's one-act play The Bear as performed by the Marx Brothers. Harpo was known for his visual comedy and prop-laden sight gags, and this costume includes a series of props that would have been hidden in the coat's pockets - including a horn, a carrot, and a stethoscope.
