The composition is taken from Sebastiano del Piombo's Pieta at San Salvatore, Ulseda in Valencia. Reproduced in Burlington Magazine, Sept 1972, M. Hirst., Sebastiano, Pieta for the Commendador Mayor, pp. 585- 595 fig. 8. There must also have been a sculptural prototype
