Production
In the Museo San Martino in Naples there is a large coloured woodcut showing the same lady, flanked by inscriptions 'SORELLA DI MASANIELLO', a companion woodcut shows the 'MOGLIE DI MASANIELLO'. Tommaso ANIELLO, a young fisherman, was leader of the popular rebellion against the Viceroy of Naples in July 1647, and was murdered after only a week in power. The dish might therefore been made in the Naples area (?Castelli) in or after 1647. But the woodcut itself is clearly derived from an earlier original as shown by the dress.
G. Donatone agreed this is Masaniello's sister. (1982)
