Object history | This qipao contain two key elements of the 1950s women dress style: waspy waists and bust darts. This body-hugging style was extremely fashionable at that time. They were made by a skilled and elderly Shanghainese tailor in the 1950s. It belonged to the donor's sister, Wu Qihui 吴其慧 (1928 - 2019) who was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. When she was young, she lived abroad for several years with her father, Wu Yaoqi who was a consul of the Beiyang government, officially the First Republic of China (1912-28). Wu studied in the Foreign Languages Department of St. John's University in Shanghai, majoring in English Language and Literature. After graduating from university, she went to Beijing to work for Xinhua News Agency for more than 30 years and was promoted to be senior editor. In 2001 Wu was awarded the honorary title of Senior Translator by China Translators Association. |
