Object history
Acquired by the V&A from Leslie Linder (1904-1973) in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest, a collection of ca. 2150 watercolours, drawings, literary manuscripts, correspondence, books, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Beatrix Potter and her family.

"Pre-war copy, 1907-1911 sheets with the different pictures on pp.68 and 81." Differs from first French edition published in 1921: Frederick Warne not a limited company in this edition and two translators given instead of only one in 1921 edition. Ink inscription on upper endpaper reads: "For / Janie Watt Brown / from Beatrix Potter / Oct 22nd 20 / Sawrey". Note in Leslie Linder's manuscript catalogue reads: "Although inscribed ... the copy was in B.P.'s possession at her death, so cannot have been given?" (for quotations, see Beatrix Potter : the V&A collection (The Victoria and Albert Museum and Frederick Warne, 1985), p.183).
