Object history
Purchase: Henry Wallis Collection.
Purchase price note: 1116 to 1151-1904 purchased for £700.
When this jar came into the Museum in 1904 as part of the Henry Wallis Collection, it was believed to be of a type without handles. During conservation, leading up to the reinstallation of the V&A ceramics galleries in 2010-11, discoloured over-painting was removed on two sides of the jar, revealing the scars of where two original handles had been attached. It became clear that the remains of these handles had been thoroughly ground off and the affected areas had been filled in and painted over to present the jar as complete.
