Object history | From the Casa de Pilatos. Formerly Henry Wallis Collection. |
Historical context | The Casa de Pilatos was the villa founded in Seville around 1490 by the governor of Andalusia, Pedro Enriquez. The house was extensively remodelled between 1520 and 1539, and is a magnificent survival of the kind of house built by the rich nobles of Seville during the sixteenth century. Above all it shows the taste for tiles. These blend elements of Spain's Islamic heritage in the Mudéjar style and new Renaissance influences from Italy. (M. Rosser-Owen, 2010 p. 103). |
