Cap

1800-1880 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Skull cap of plain weave silk, padded and quilted, embroidered with silk in eyelets and chain stitch, lined with plain weave cotton.
The cap is made from a wide band of purple silk joined onto a roundel which is made from a darker purple silk; the roundel is not padded but is decorated with an 8-pointed 'whirling' bent cypress [moving anti-clockwise] formed of eyelets in white silk, 'pearls' around a small circlet, again formed of white eyelets, edged with black silk cord held by white silk stitches. The 'bent' cypress of eyelets is repeated at the outer edge, pointing inwards, on a row of eyelets, edged again in black and white.
The wide band joined to the crown roundel is padded and quilted in a series of narrow diagonal lines. The decorative pattern commenced with a line of light green chain stitch, en encircling line of white eyelets followed by an irregular zigzag, another encircling line and the small and larger 'bent' cypress motifs pointing down; all in white eyelets. This composite band is repeated in an inverted form along the bottom edge.
Lining: cotton through which the quilting and embroidery has been worked.
Embroidery Threads: silk: white 2S; black 2S; green 2Z.
