THE ANNUNCIATION
About 1490
By a follower of Melozzo da Forlì (1438-94)

The Annunciation was a popular subject in art of this period. In this typical depiction, the archangel Gabriel kneels before the Virgin Mary to announce that she is to bear a son a name him Jesus. Above, a dove (symbol of the Holy Spirit) descends from God the Father, The stem of lilies represents the Virgin's purity.
