PORTRAIT OF WARREN HASTINGS (1732-1818) Watercolour on ivory Unknown location c. 1795 P.7-1915 The 18th-century European tradition of portraiture on ivory was introduced to India a century later. Paintings were commissioned by Europeans or highly anglicised Indians.
