The 18th-century European tradition of portraiture on ivory was introduced to India a century later. Paintings were commissioned by Europeans or highly anglicised Indians. When the Museum acquired this painting, depicting the Governor-General of India, it was descrobed as ‘a good example of early 19th-century English work’ and was displayed alongside other records from the East India Company.(01/08/2017) |
