Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This modern pantomime poster for a regional production of Cinderella highlights the participation of popular television actors over any references to the plot of the fairy-tale. Rolf Harris takes lead billing. Although not known as an actor, but rather as a television presenter and artist, the demands of a role in pantomime are very different from those of a serious play. Similarly, Gareth Chilcott, a former rugby star, appears in the production. Lesley Joseph and Sylvester McCoy, although well-known at the time for their appearances in popular BBC television programmes Birds of a Featherand Doctor Who, have both had more serious acting roles on stage.

20th-century pantomime posters

The limited use of colour on the Snow White poster makes it cheap to produce.

The stress on the fact that it is the ‘panto’ version and will be ‘live on stage’ suggests the producers feel they have to compete with television and film.

The Cinderella poster shows producers harnessing the power of television to draw audiences. The actors’ faces are much more prominent than the fairy coach and godmother who form an integral part of the plot.
