Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Physical description | Silver, silver-gilt and white marble clock with silvered dial and later movement signed by Grohe, London, the silver parts by William Pitts and Joseph Preedy, London. The movement brass and silvered brass with Brocot suspended pendulum set within an antique altar with a lamb on a flaming pyre and ram's head masks joined by ribbon tied swags flanked by a seated figure to the left with ewer and basin, and two figures to the right, one blowing two trumpets; supported on four sphinxes, the bases with two friezes applied with Apollo's mask flanked by musical trophies, flaming urns and griffins, with D-shaped stepped sides and paw feet: the dial engine turned with decorative pattern, silvered and painted with numerals. |
