This object is an example of a Parisian snuffbox set with popular Italian micromosaics. The view is of the ruins of a temple at Paestum in Italy, an ancient city founded around 600BC by the Greeks. Scenes such as these were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as mementos of the sites many visted on the 'Grand Tour' of Italy.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
