This portrait shows a South Indian dancing-girl holding a flower. A local Tanjore (Thanjavur) artist painted it on glass around 1860, using gouache (opaque watercolour paint)and gold leaf. Glass-paintings were very fragile, so the British seldom brought them back to England. This is one of only eight in the V&A.
