Cloisonné enamel pieces were not common domestic items but were usually specifically commissioned for palaces or temples. This zun vase was made in the shape of an archaic bronze vessel, and would have been placed on an altar together with a similar vase, a pair of candlesticks and an incense burner. Large objects like this became particularly popular during the 17th century.

Purchased from Messrs. Morgan Bros (42 Cannon Strett, EC), accessioned in 1870. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
