Physical description
A highly decorated scabbard for a curved presentation sword; bearing a coat of arms for Thornton of Brockhall and Newnham, Northants, quartered with those of Lee and Fremeaux of Kingsthorpe, relations by marriage.

Object history
Thomas Reeve Thornton was promoted to Captain in the Northampton Cavalry on August 29, 1798 (?). He was made High Sheriff of Northampton the same year. It is probable that this sword was presented to him in 1808 on his retirement.
