Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

This painting was previously on long-term loan to Leman House, Ballygate, Beccles. It is currently on long term loan to the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, London.

An oil on panel portrait of Sir John Leman in mayoral robes, wearing a chain of office with pendant jewel and holding a pair of gloves. In the background the arms of the sitter and an inscription which reads: "Sir John Leman, Knt. / Lord Mayor of London. / AD 1616. AEtat 89".

Production
One of four extant versions, the original attributed to Levinus de Vogelaare. This version must post-date the death of the sitter in 1632 because his final age is given.
