Snuffbox
second half 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The scene on the cover of this snuffbox is after an etching by de Launay of a painting by Fragonard, as is the image on the front wall of the box.
Whilst the subjects on the other four panels are not based on specific paintings or etchings, they are evidently in the same manner as the two identified panels.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
