Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Designs upon imported wares from China and Japan inspired the fashion for 'chinoiserie' throughout western Europe in the mid-eighteenth century. European craftsmen created stylised 'Chinese' scenes and motifs, developing their own artistic interpretation of Chinese styles.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
