Verriere

ca. 1720 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The enormous popularity of oriental porcelain in France during the first half of the eighteenth century has been attributed to the visits of the Siamese ambassadors to Versailles in 1684 and 1686. The second of these delegations was received by the king himself, and the event promoted interest in all things oriental, bringing them into the height of fashion.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
