The cross is decorated with convolvulus which, in the language of flowers popular at this date, symbolised extinguished hopes.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

A small, black marble cross inlaid with pietre dure depicting sprays of white convolvulus and green leaves. The top of the cross is pierced and hold and gold loop.
