Snuffbox

ca. 1770 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This double snuffbox is composed of two compartments of unequal size - one much larger than the other - which is unusual. Its overall size and the style of its ornament indicate it may have been used on a table rather than carried in the pocket.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
